From the steep streets of the historic hill to the wide suburbs, F H Roofing, based in Beckingham, can remove moss, algae and lichen from Lincoln roofs and check the tiles and gutters afterwards.
Lincoln is a city of contrasts when it comes to roofs. Up the hill there are older terraces and period properties with steep pitches and awkward access, while the suburbs have long rows of inter-war and modern homes with broad, simple slopes. Moss behaves much the same on both, but how we reach and clean the roof differs a good deal.
F H Roofing is based in Beckingham, a short way from the city, and we regularly cover Lincoln for roof cleaning and moss removal. Each visit begins with a look at the tiles, pitch, access and gutters, followed by a free quotation that explains the method and what we expect to find. Homeowners, landlords and small commercial owners are all welcome to ask.
A roof that holds moisture invites growth. Moss builds in the joins between tiles, algae streaks the slopes that miss the sun, and lichen sticks on as pale, hard rosettes. In a city with mature trees, tall buildings and many shaded gardens, drying time is short. The consequences are practical. Water sits in the tile, frost can break up the face, and loose moss fills valleys and gutters. When those back up, rain finds the wall and the fascia instead of the drain.
We deal with thick growth by hand, using scrapers and brushes, then consider low-pressure or soft-wash treatment for the algae and lichen that remain. Steep older roofs on the hill call for extra care with access and tile condition, as brittle slate or clay can be damaged by a careless step. Larger suburban roofs of concrete tile are generally more forgiving. We choose methods to suit what is actually in front of us and say plainly when cleaning is not the right answer.
After cleaning, we check each slope for cracked, slipped or missing tiles and for gaps in ridge and hip mortar. Gutters and downpipes are cleared, since that is where much of the removed debris ends up. A preventive biocide treatment can be added if you want one. How soon moss returns depends on shade, trees and weather, so we do not promise a clean roof for any set time. Many owners find a light recheck every so often is the most practical routine.
Lincoln is a cathedral city with a steep historic hill area of older terraces and period properties, as well as large suburbs of inter-war and modern housing. Narrow streets, limited parking and steep pitches in the older part can affect how we set up, so it helps to mention them when asking for a quote. We cover Lincoln and the surrounding area, including North Hykeham, Sleaford, Gainsborough and Market Rasen. For a landlord with several properties, or a shared roof, we are happy to look at the whole picture.
We also take on roof moss removal work in nearby North Hykeham, Sleaford, Gainsborough, Market Rasen.

“FH Roofing did a fantastic job on our full roof replacement in Alford. The team were professional, turned up on time every day, and kept everything clean and tidy throughout the job. They explained everything clearly from the start and the finished roof looks brilliant. You can really tell they take pride in their work. Would definitely recommend FH Roofing to anyone needing a new roof!”
Often we can, though access has to be safe. Tell us about parking, street width and roof height beforehand, and we will plan the equipment needed or let you know if a particular roof is not practical for us.
Removing moss reduces constant dampness, which helps tiles last, and the inspection afterwards can catch small faults early. It will not fix tiles that are already failing, but it gives you an honest picture.
Yes. If tiles are too brittle or the roof needs repair first, we will explain this and suggest alternatives. A frank answer is more useful to you than doing work that causes damage.
