Stamford's limestone streets and Georgian rooflines call for a careful touch, so we remove moss and lichen from stone, slate and tile roofs by hand or with gentle soft-wash treatments.
Roofs in a historic town deserve a more cautious approach than a modern housing estate. In Stamford, many roofs are natural stone or slate, laid decades or even centuries ago, and the surface is often softer or more brittle than it looks from the ground.
F H Roofing covers Stamford for moss removal and roof cleaning, and we treat the material as the starting point. We look at what the roof is covered with, what is growing on it and how well it is bedded, then suggest a gentle method. If a roof needs conservation-minded repair rather than cleaning, we will tell you plainly.
Natural stone and slate hold growth differently from concrete. Lichen is especially common on stone, forming slow-spreading patches that sometimes look attractive but keep the surface damp and can eat into softer stone over time. Moss collects in the joints and behind the lower edge of each slate, and algae gives a dark, even stain. On limestone slates the surface can flake when kept wet and frozen repeatedly. Meanwhile, moss debris drops into the valley and parapet gutters that older buildings often have, where blockages can send water into walls that were never built to cope with it.
On older material, gentle is the only sensible option. We use hand tools with care, lifting moss from the surface and out of the joints rather than scraping hard against the stone or slate. A low-pressure soft-wash with a suitable treatment may then be used for lichen and algae, applied in a controlled way so that water is not forced under the slates. We do not blast the surface. Some roofs are simply too fragile to be cleaned beyond a light brush, and in that case our honest advice is to leave well alone and look at targeted repair instead.
After cleaning, a close inspection is worthwhile on any older roof. We look for slipped or cracked slates, failing nails or pegs, open joints and weakened lead details. Gutters, valleys and hoppers are cleared and tested, since they often take heavy flows on traditional buildings. A preventative treatment can slow the return of growth, though stone roofs may keep some lichen as part of their character and we will ask what you want. We never offer a fixed period for how long a roof stays clean, because the setting and weather play such a part.
Stamford is a historic limestone town on the River Welland, with Georgian stone buildings and a large conservation area, where older roofs often use natural stone or slate. If your property is in the conservation area, it is sensible to check what is allowed before any alteration, though simple cleaning is a different matter from changing materials; if you are unsure, ask the right authority yourself. Tight streets can affect access, and we plan for that. We also cover Grantham and Spalding. Get in touch for a free quotation and a straightforward talk about your roof.

Usually yes, using careful hand work and, where suitable, a low-pressure soft-wash. We assess first. If a roof is too fragile for any cleaning, we will say so and discuss repair rather than risk damage.
Not always. Light lichen on stone is often harmless and some owners like its look. If it is thick, keeps the surface wet or sits on soft stone, removal makes sense. We will talk through the options with you.
It should not. Our aim is to lift growth without altering the material, joints or appearance. We avoid harsh treatment and do not change the way the roof is laid.
