Whether your Grantham home is a Victorian terrace, an inter-war semi or a newer estate house, F H Roofing can remove moss and lichen by hand and check the roof over afterwards.
Roofs rarely fail overnight. More often there is a slow build of growth, a gutter that starts to overflow, and then a stained ceiling a winter or two later. Dealing with moss, algae and lichen at the right moment is one of the cheaper ways of keeping a roof in working order, and it does not always need a full repair.
F H Roofing covers Grantham for roof cleaning and moss removal, from terraced houses with narrow slopes to semis and detached homes with wide tiled roofs. We are based in Beckingham, and visit to give a free quotation, explaining what is on the roof, what we would remove and by which method. Nothing is done until you are happy with that plan.
These three growths each behave differently. Algae spreads as black or grey staining and prefers north-facing slopes. Moss roots into the gaps between tiles and builds thick pads that trap rainwater. Lichen forms pale or orange crusts that cling tightly and take longer to shift. All of them keep a roof wetter than it should be, which shortens the life of tiles and the mortar beneath ridges. As moss dries and falls, it gathers in valleys and gutters and can block them completely.
Heavy growth comes off by hand, using scrapers and brushes, so tiles are not stressed or stripped. We then consider a low-pressure or soft-wash treatment for what remains, because it works by dissolving the growth over time rather than blasting it. Different tiles take cleaning differently: concrete is usually robust, clay needs gentleness and slate depends on its age. Where a roof is too weak for cleaning, we will say so and discuss repair. We never use harsh force on a roof.
The visit does not end when the moss is gone. We inspect the tiles for cracks and slips, check the ridge and hip mortar, and clear the gutters and downpipes of everything that came down. A preventive treatment may help, although shade, nearby trees and local weather will always influence how soon growth returns, and we do not promise a set period. For homes with overhanging branches, trimming them back makes a real difference. A short recheck now and then keeps small faults from becoming larger ones.
Grantham is a busy market town in south Lincolnshire on the River Witham, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces, inter-war semis and newer estates. Older streets often have tighter access and steeper pitches, while estate roofs are usually larger and more uniform, so the approach and the time needed differ. We cover Grantham and work around Sleaford, Stamford and North Hykeham as well. If your home backs onto trees or has a roof that rarely sees sun, mention it when you call, because that often explains the heavy growth.
We also take on roof moss removal work in nearby Sleaford, Stamford, North Hykeham.

There is no fixed interval. Shaded or tree-covered roofs may need attention sooner than open ones. Looking at your roof every year or so, and acting when growth gets thick, is a sensible rule.
Only if moss was the cause, for instance by blocking a gutter or lifting a tile. Leaks often come from cracked tiles, flashings or ridge faults. We inspect after cleaning and tell you honestly what we find.
Yes, we can quote for small commercial premises such as units, workshops and shops with tiled or similar roofs. Access, height and working around staff or customers all affect the plan, so describe the building when you ask.
