Gainsborough has plenty of older brick terraces and period houses where moss collects quietly, and F H Roofing offers careful roof cleaning, tile checks and gutter clearing across the town.
Picture a long Victorian terrace on a damp morning: every roof in the row has a slightly different shade of green. That is how moss tends to show up in Gainsborough, one slope at a time, often on the side that never gets the sun. By the time it is obvious from the street, it has usually been spreading for a good while.
F H Roofing works across Gainsborough cleaning roofs of moss, algae and lichen, whether the property is a period house, a terrace or a modern estate home. Our process is simple. We assess the roof, explain what we would remove and how, carry out the work by hand and with gentle treatments, and then check the tiles and gutters. Quotations are free, and there is no obligation to go ahead.
Moss acts like a sponge. It soaks up rain and keeps it pressed against the tile, so the surface stays wet long after the weather clears. In cold spells that trapped water freezes and expands, and over several winters it can flake the face of concrete and soft clay tiles. Algae and lichen add to the staining and slowly etch the surface. Fragments drop into gutters and valleys, where they pack into a mat that stops water draining, and overflowing water can stain walls and soak into brickwork.
The first stage is manual. We scrape and brush off thick moss, taking care at tile edges and ridges, where damage is easy to cause. After that, remaining algae and lichen can be treated with a low-pressure application or soft wash, which allows a mild treatment to soak in and loosen growth without driving water under the laps. On period roofs with older tiles we are more cautious and will say if cleaning might do more harm than good. You will always hear our reasoning first.
Cleaning is only half the job. With the moss gone, we look over the tiles for cracks, slipped courses and worn pointing along the ridge, because these are the faults moss tends to hide. Gutters and downpipes are then cleared so water leaves the roof freely. If you want to slow regrowth, a preventive treatment can be applied, though how long a roof stays clean depends on shade, trees and the weather. Cutting back branches and clearing gutters now and then helps more than most people expect.
Gainsborough sits on the River Trent in the north-west of the county, and its streets include many older brick terraces and period houses alongside newer estates. That variety means roofs of very different ages and condition, often within a few minutes of each other. We cover Gainsborough and the surrounding area, and also work towards Lincoln, Brigg and Market Rasen. If you own a terrace, a landlord property or a small commercial building and want a few roofs looked at together, let us know when you ask for a quote.
We also take on roof moss removal work in nearby Lincoln, Brigg, Market Rasen.

Often, yes, provided the tiles are sound. Removing moss reduces constant dampness and lets you see the true condition of the roof. If tiles are too fragile, we will say so and suggest repair or replacement instead.
Algae is a dark film or streak, moss is a thick green or brown cushion, and lichen is a flat, crusty patch that clings tightly. Moss is usually removed by hand, while algae and lichen respond to soft-wash treatment.
Not always. We need safe access around the property and sometimes to reach outside taps or gutters, so we will agree arrangements beforehand. It helps to tell us about any shared access or parking.
