From older terraces in the town centre to newer estates on the edge, Market Rasen roofs pick up moss and lichen, and we remove it carefully by hand or with gentle treatments.
A roof that looks fine from the pavement can look very different from a ladder. In Market Rasen we often find tiles carpeted in moss on the north-facing slope while the south side looks nearly clean. The difference comes down to sun, shade and how long the surface stays wet, and it tells us a lot about where to start.
F H Roofing works in Market Rasen and the villages around it, clearing moss, algae and lichen from domestic and small commercial roofs. We keep the approach simple: look at the roof, explain what is growing on it, and agree a method that suits the tiles rather than reaching for the strongest option.
Three different things tend to be growing up there. Algae is the thin dark film that streaks tiles after a damp spell. Lichen is slower and grips harder, forming flat grey, white or orange rosettes. Moss is the thick green mat that holds water like a sponge. All three feed on moisture and settle fastest on rough or porous surfaces, which is why older concrete tiles suffer more than smooth ones. As moss thickens, it lifts tile edges, traps water at the laps and drops clumps into the gutter, where it mixes with leaf litter and can send rain running down the wall instead of into the downpipe.
Our first choice is almost always manual removal. We loosen the moss with scrapers, brush it down the slope and collect it so it does not end up in the gutters. Where a roof also has stubborn algae or lichen, we may apply a biocide and, if suitable, rinse with a low-pressure soft-wash. Roofs with old or fragile tiles, which you do find on terraces and older brick houses, may suit hand work only. Newer estate roofs with sturdier concrete tiles often take a soft-wash well. Either way we avoid forcing water under the tiles.
With the moss gone, problems that were hidden become visible. We look for cracked or slipped tiles, crumbling mortar on ridges and hips, and any gaps where water could get in. Small repairs are worth doing straight away while we are on the roof. Then we clear the gutters and check that downpipes run freely. To slow regrowth, a protective treatment can be applied, and trimming back overhanging branches helps a good deal too. No treatment lasts for ever, so we describe it honestly as slowing the return, not stopping it.
Market Rasen is a small market town at the foot of the Wolds, and its roofs reflect that mix: older brick houses and terraces close to the centre, with newer estates around them. Terraced roofs usually share valleys and parapet details with neighbours, so we take extra care to keep debris off adjoining properties. Exposed roofs facing the open country catch more wind and rain and can stay damp longer. We also work around Louth, Brigg and Lincoln, so we are used to travelling between them. Send us a few details and we will arrange a free quotation.

Often yes. Moss spreads from the damp, shaded patches and keeps lifting tile edges as it grows. Treating it early is usually quicker, kinder to the tiles and cheaper to deal with than waiting until the whole slope is covered.
Yes. Terraces need a little more planning because of shared boundaries, gutters and access, but moss removal is routine for us. We keep debris contained and talk through access with you before starting.
Not much. Make sure we can reach the house safely, move any cars from underneath the work area, and let us know about any known leaks or loose tiles so we can look at them first.
