Flat fenland sky and little shelter mean Spalding roofs stay damp for long spells, and moss, algae and lichen follow, so we clear them with careful manual and soft-wash methods.
Spalding sits low and open on the River Welland, and roofs there get the full benefit of whatever the weather brings. Rain arrives sideways across the flat land, mist hangs about on cool mornings, and a roof that never quite dries out is just what moss is looking for.
F H Roofing covers Spalding for roof moss removal, cleaning and the checks that should follow. We deal with older terraces near the centre as well as newer housing round the edges, and we explain every step first so you know what to expect before anyone climbs a ladder.
On an open fenland site, there is little to block the wind and rain, but also little sun on the shady side of a pitched roof. Moisture lingers there, and that is where algae darkens the tiles, lichen locks on and moss forms deep green mats. Growth tends to sit along the lower courses, in valleys and beside chimneys, because water pools in those places. The consequences go beyond appearance. Wet tiles are more prone to frost damage, moss can lift the edges of tiles, and the debris it sheds sits in the gutters, where it holds water and can overflow against brickwork.
Most of the time we begin with manual moss removal, scraping and brushing the roof in sections and gathering the waste. Older brick terraces in the centre may have slate or older clay tiles that suit hand work. Newer estates tend to have concrete tiles that cope well with a low-pressure soft-wash treatment after the main clearing, which deals with algae and lichen as well. We keep water volume and force modest, and we do not use anything that could drive water beneath the tiles. If we think the surface is too weak, we will say so and suggest repair.
Cleaning exposes the true state of the roof, so we go over it once more looking at tile condition, ridge and hip mortar and flashings. Gutters and downpipes are cleared and checked, as fenland rain is often heavy and sudden and blocked gutters spill straight down the wall. A treatment can then be applied to slow regrowth, though we can only describe it as helping, not guaranteeing results. If trees or nearby buildings shade your roof, that will influence how quickly growth comes back, and we will point it out.
Spalding is a fenland town on the River Welland in South Holland, flat and open, with older brick terraces in the centre and newer housing around it. Terraces often share gutters and wall details with neighbours, so we plan access and keep debris from falling next door. On the newer streets we see larger roof areas and plain concrete tiles, which are quicker to treat. We also cover Holbeach, Boston and Stamford, so Spalding is part of an area we travel regularly. Sometimes, but in damp, open areas growth can return. The speed depends on shade and tile type. A treatment slows it down and an occasional check lets you deal with small patches before they spread.
Yes. We plan around shared gutters and boundaries, keep waste contained and tell you in advance how we will reach the roof. Terrace roofs are a regular part of our work.
It often does, which is a good thing. Moss can hide cracked tiles and tired mortar. We point out anything we find, explain how urgent it is and quote separately for any repair.
