North Hykeham has plenty of inter-war and post-war roofs that have been quietly collecting moss for decades, and we clean them by hand or with soft-wash methods that protect the tiles.
Think of a typical North Hykeham street: a run of post-war semis, a few bungalows with low roofs, and a newer cul-de-sac nearby. Each of those roofs ages differently, yet moss tends to show up on all of them once the tiles have a few damp winters behind them.
F H Roofing covers North Hykeham for moss removal, roof cleaning and the small repairs that often come to light once a roof is clear. We are based a short distance away near Lincoln, so we know the area well. We explain what we find in plain terms and leave the decision on the next step with you.
The older tiles on inter-war and post-war houses have had decades of weather to roughen their surface, and a rough surface gives spores something to grip. Algae arrives first as dark streaks, lichen settles in as pale crusty patches, and moss follows where tiles stay wet. Shade from trees, a neighbouring extension or a chimney stack speeds all of it up. The harm builds slowly: moss lifts tile edges and holds water against the surface, frost then breaks the tile face in winter, and fragments plus moss clumps end up in the gutters. Blocked gutters then overflow down the walls and can lead to damp inside.
Hand removal comes first. We scrape the moss off in sections and brush the loose material away, taking care not to damage tile edges. For algae and lichen that hand work will not shift, a low-pressure soft-wash with a biocide may be added, which kills the growth at the root instead of just scrubbing the surface. Bungalow roofs with shallow pitches often suit a soft-wash because they are easy to reach and treat evenly, while steeper or older roofs may be better done by hand alone. If a tile is already crumbling, we will say so and suggest repair before cleaning.
Once the roof is clear we walk it again looking for cracked tiles, loose ridge sections and exposed mortar. Anything small we can usually fix on the spot. Gutters are then cleared of the debris the job produces and checked for sagging or leaking joints. A moss-prevention treatment can be applied to slow regrowth, and cutting back overhanging branches helps just as much. We never promise how long the result lasts, because that depends on the weather and the roof's setting, but a roof that is checked now and then rarely gets out of hand.
North Hykeham is a large residential town just south-west of Lincoln, and it is made up mostly of inter-war and post-war estates, bungalows and newer family housing. That mix means we see everything from older concrete tiles to modern interlocking ones, often on streets where several roofs have the same age and the same problems. Not really different, but they are easier to reach, so soft-wash treatments can be applied evenly. Low roofs also tend to be shaded by hedges and trees, so we pay attention to the gutters and any growth near the eaves.
Yes, over time. Thick moss holds water against tiles, lifts their edges and can push water under the laps. Frost then cracks wet tiles. Removing the growth early reduces the chance of leaks developing.
Always. Once the moss is off we inspect the roof and show you what we find. If tiles or ridge sections need attention, we explain the options and quote separately, so nothing is added without your agreement.
