With Georgian and Victorian brick buildings below a famously tall spire, and weather coming off the Wolds, Louth roofs need coverings and details chosen with care.
Louth is the kind of town where you notice roofs. The skyline of the centre is full of pitched slopes, chimneys and old brick, and the weather that rolls off the Wolds tests every one of them. When a roof here gets old, the replacement deserves some thought.
F H Roofing and Property Maintenance works from Beckingham and covers Louth. We fit new slate and tiled roofs, carry out full re-roofs and install flat roofs on extensions and garages. Below we set out our approach, section by section, so you can see what a sound roofing job looks like.
Natural slate is often the natural fit for Georgian and Victorian properties, with clay or plain tiles as traditional alternatives. Slate may be Welsh or Spanish, and the two have different looks and costs. Newer homes around the edge of town take concrete interlocking tiles very well. Flat roofs over rear extensions can be felt, EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass. We will help you balance looks, weight, cost and upkeep honestly, rather than steering you to a single product.
Weather from the Wolds means the build-up beneath the covering has to be sound. We strip back, check rafters, and replace weak battens. A breathable membrane goes down with correct laps, followed by new battens set out to suit the slates or tiles. Roof ventilation is addressed so damp air does not collect. Ridges are fixed firmly, and lead flashings around chimneys and parapet or abutment walls are replaced, because those joints take the heaviest rain and the most movement.
Older streets can limit access, so we plan scaffold position and waste removal before work starts. Rain is the usual reason for pauses, and we cover sections as we go so the house stays dry. Ask for a written quote naming each element: stripping, disposal, scaffold, battens, underlay, covering, ridge, flashings and extras such as a Velux. If a quote leaves things out, ask why. A clear list protects both you and us from misunderstandings.
Louth is a Wolds market town, and we work in it as well as in nearby Market Rasen, Horncastle, Alford and Mablethorpe. The mix of Georgian, Victorian and newer buildings means the right approach varies from street to street, and some older properties need extra care at junctions and chimneys. We always look at the roof in person before suggesting a method. To get started, ask for a free quote and tell us a little about your house.
We also take on new roof installations work in nearby Market Rasen, Horncastle, Alford, Mablethorpe.

For many older buildings, yes. Slate is long lasting and looks right on period properties. It does need sound timbers and skilled laying. On a modern house, a concrete tile may offer better value, so we weigh up both options.
Yes, and it should be. New lead flashing around chimneys is one of the key details in a re-roof, since old flashings are a frequent source of leaks. It is much easier to do while the covering is off.
We strip and cover in manageable sections and make the roof weathertight at the end of each day. If heavy or prolonged rain is forecast, we may wait. Safety and a dry house come first.
