Gainsborough's many older terraces and period houses often still have original timber soffits, and after decades of weather those boards are usually due for replacement.
Many of the homes in Gainsborough were built long before UPVC existed, and timber boards at the eaves have been repainted, patched and propped up more than once. At some point that stops being worthwhile.
F H Roofing covers Gainsborough and neighbouring areas, taking out worn soffits and replacing them with maintenance-free UPVC. We work on period terraces, inter-war houses and newer estate homes, and we talk you through what we find as the old boards come away, so there are no surprises about what is under them.
On a long brick terrace the soffits run unbroken for some distance, so one leaking joint can ruin a good deal of timber. Old boards also tend to have been painted many times, which hides rot until it is advanced. We remove the boards in manageable sections, so the property is never left open, and inspect the rafter ends as we go. New UPVC soffit boards are then fitted along the whole run, with neat joins and trims at corners and returns. It is usually easier to do an entire terrace elevation than to patch odd lengths.
If the fascias, soffits and bargeboards are all weary, a complete roofline renewal gives a tidy, uniform result. It also lets us sort out ventilation properly. Older roof spaces often had gaps and draughts that let air through by accident; once the eaves are sealed with solid boards, that airflow can disappear. Ventilated soffits put it back deliberately. That helps stop condensation, musty lofts and damp timber. We look at the loft where we can and recommend vents based on what is there, not a standard formula.
A new roofline is only as good as the water system above it. Cracked, sagging or leaking gutters will stain and eventually damage even UPVC. When boards are replaced, it is a convenient moment to renew guttering to match, with fresh brackets and seals. Day to day, cleaning is simple: warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft brush will keep white boards bright. Doing it with a ladder is a job for a professional, so if the height is awkward, ask us to include a clean on a future visit.
Gainsborough sits on the River Trent in the north-west of the county, and its housing includes plenty of older brick terraces and period houses alongside newer estates. That variety means roofline jobs here can look very different from one street to the next, so each quote is based on the actual house rather than a template. We also work in Lincoln, Brigg and Market Rasen, so if you are close to Gainsborough but not quite in it, call and we will see if we can help.

White or cream plain boards suit most older properties, and they sit neatly under the eaves. We keep profiles simple and well finished, so the result looks tidy without trying to imitate decorative timberwork.
It depends on height and access. Bungalows and some low terraces can be reached from ladders or a platform, while taller houses usually need scaffold or a tower. We will explain what the job needs when we quote.
We strip them off, take them away and dispose of them. The old timber behind is checked, and if anything structural needs attention we tell you before covering it with new boards.
