Stamford's limestone streets and Georgian buildings call for thought before any roofline is touched, because rules, materials and appearance all matter more here than on a modern estate.
Few Lincolnshire towns look as old as Stamford. Much of it is natural stone, with slate or stone roofs, and a large part is inside a conservation area. That does not stop you from repairing a gutter or replacing a fascia, but it does mean you should think about what suits the building.
F H Roofing fits UPVC fascias, soffits, guttering and downpipes, and we also carry out repairs. We will give a straightforward view on whether UPVC is a sensible choice for your property, and if you are unsure about local restrictions, check with the relevant authority before work starts. Free quotations are available.
Not every Stamford house is a listed Georgian townhouse. Plenty are Victorian, inter-war or modern, and these usually take UPVC fascias and soffits without any fuss. For older stone buildings, the roofline details can be part of the character, with deep eaves, timber soffits or shaped boards. In those cases a like-for-like approach may be wiser, and we will say if UPVC is not the right fit. Where it is appropriate, we remove the old boards, inspect the rafter ends and fit new fascia and vented soffit. Always confirm any planning or conservation requirements for your address before ordering materials.
Gutters on natural stone and slate roofs have to carry water away without staining or damaging the wall below, so a leaking joint matters more than it might on brick. Cast metal systems are common on the oldest buildings, while UPVC suits many later houses and extensions. We repair joints, replace cracked sections, reset sagging brackets and fit new runs with downpipes. Clearing is also a regular need: leaves from mature trees, moss and silt build up and cause overflow that marks stonework. If you are unsure which system belongs on your building, ask before committing, because the wrong choice can look out of place.
On stone-fronted houses, black UPVC guttering tends to sit better than white, though plenty of owners choose white for fascias. Round or ogee profiles can echo older styling, and deep flow is available where a roof needs extra capacity. Seamless guttering is another option; ask us whether it suits your property. Before replacing anything, check the existing timber for rot. Probe the underside of the fascia and the soffit near the wall with a screwdriver, and look for flaking paint, dark staining and soft spots. Rotten wood next to stone can also leave damp in the wall, so it deserves prompt attention.
Stamford is a historic limestone town on the River Welland, with Georgian stone buildings and a large conservation area, and older roofs there often use natural stone or slate. That shapes how we approach a job: more time looking, more conversation about materials and more care on access. We cover the town and surrounding area, as well as Grantham and Spalding. If your home is in the conservation area, tell us at the first contact so we can talk through what is practical. We provide a free quotation and an honest opinion about what the roofline actually needs.
We also take on UPVC fascias, soffits and guttering work in nearby Grantham, Spalding.

It depends on the building and the rules that apply to your address. We cannot decide that for you, so check with the relevant authority before ordering. We can then advise on what is practical to fit.
Persistent leaks can leave staining and keep the wall damp, which may harm the stone and pointing over time. It is better to fix a dripping joint promptly than to wait until marks appear.
Black guttering often looks neat against pale stone, while white fascias are widely used. It is a matter of taste and, in sensitive areas, of what is acceptable. Look at nearby buildings for cues.
