The ridge is the highest line of the roof, and in open Lincolnshire country it takes the full force of a gale. When gusts lift or loosen the tiles along it, they can slide, crack or land in the garden. Sometimes the first you know about it is a thud in the night or a line of pale mortar scattered across the lawn the next morning.
This guide covers Ridge Tile Storm Damage Repairs: how to recognise the damage, what to do safely in the first hours, how the repair is carried out and how to talk to your insurer. It is written to help you make calm decisions rather than rush into the first offer that knocks on the door.
You do not need to climb up to see most ridge problems. Walk around the house after the wind has dropped and look along the top of the roof from a safe distance, using binoculars if you have them. A crooked line, a gap where a tile should be, a ridge piece sitting at an angle or fresh pale mortar on the ground all suggest damage. Check the gravel, the drive and any flat roofs below for fragments. Inside, look in the loft for daylight along the apex or damp patches on timbers beneath it. Hips, the sloping ridges, and the end caps called gable ends are worth checking too, since they are often loosened at the same time.
Safety comes first, so keep clear of anything that looks about to fall.
The usual approach is to remove loose or broken ridge tiles, clean off crumbled mortar and check the roof below for damage. Sound tiles are rebedded on fresh mortar, and any that are cracked are replaced with a close match where possible. Matching age, colour and profile can be tricky on older roofs, so a perfect match is not always available. Some roofs use a dry-fix ridge system with mechanical fixings, and it is worth asking which suits the existing roof. Where wind has gone further, the work may include checking battens, the underlay beneath the ridge and nearby tiles that have shifted. If conditions are unsafe, a temporary repair can keep the weather out until a proper one can be done.
Ridge repair can be a short visit or a larger job, so a fair quote reflects what is actually wrong. The length of ridge involved and the number of tiles to be replaced set the scale. Access is a big factor, because tall or steep roofs may need scaffolding or a tower to work safely. The condition of the mortar and of the roof beneath, any hidden damage to battens, and the difficulty of matching the tile profile all play a part. If the mortar has failed along the whole ridge, rebedding the lot is often more sensible than patching one bay. Weather windows and whether a temporary make-safe is needed first can also affect how the job is organised.

We can talk through what the repair involves, which can be useful when you are speaking to your insurer, though we cannot advise on policies or how a claim will turn out. Sometimes, but they can fall or let rain in during the next gust. If a tile looks ready to drop or water is entering, it is better to arrange a temporary or permanent repair soon. Keep people clear of the area below meanwhile.
It is wise to contact your insurer early, take photos and keep damaged materials if it is safe. They can explain their process. We can talk through what the repair involves, but we cannot advise on policies or claim outcomes.
On newer roofs a close match is usually possible. Older or weathered tiles are harder, so the new pieces may look slightly different at first. A roofer can show you options, or reuse sound tiles where possible to keep the line looking even.
